In half an hour we had three horses saddled and with a single glance around we rode off up the gravel driveway to the main road. It was a two-lane blacktop but it was covered in twigs and leaves like no one had driven on it in a decade. It was creepy and silent, except for the birds and I think a distant woodpecker rattle. I couldn’t stop feeling like I was in a zombie movie.
But as the sun climbed higher and green light filtered down through the trees I couldn’t help but relax. The day was beautiful. Too beautiful for anything awful to happen. The warm air ran across my bare legs like a massage. I could smell flowers and green without a trace of car pollution. Somehow the quality of light was… different. Like I was seeing the world through a perfect Instagram filter. A warm sense of camaraderie seeped through my shoulders to my limbs. I glanced at Sophie and for the first time since I’d met her I could admire the natural brown in her hair, the slim curves, the quick smile. For a second I even felt vaguely… attracted to her.
You’re not into that, Ange, I told myself. Well, except for the one time in college, that lasted a month.
I shook the memory aside by watching Dave. He rode easily, body relaxed in the saddle, that crazy muscular form straining at his shirt. His presumptuous take-charge attitude almost seemed gallant now. Adorable the way he was being protective.
“What’s that?” Sophie startled me out of a daydream about Dave pounding my cunt the way he had Sophie's.
“Looks like… no.” Dave replied.
As we got closer I spotted the tents and little racks and structures built of raw saplings lashed together. There were a few campfires and what looked like people dressed in army fatigues. Hunters? Then I noticed what was really wrong. Maybe I was the first one to even notice.
“Where’s the road?”
Just by the edge of the camp the asphalt ended. Just became a patchy collection of potholes, then debris then forest floor. And fully grown trees, fifty feet tall, blocked the path.
“Must've taken a wrong turn, right?” Sophie shrugged. “We’ll just ask these guys.” She stood up in her stirrups and cupped a hand to her mouth.
“No, don’t!” Dave tried to stop her. Too late.
“Hey, can you guys tell us where town is?” she shouted.
One of the hunters spun at the sound and after a moment he stood up. Easily over six feet tall. Black hair, burly, like a football player, and bare chested. Oh geezus. He wasn’t wearing army camo, his skin was mottled green!
And in his hand was a spear.
